Quotes I Like
“Books are easily destroyed. But words will live as long as people can remember them.”
“Time goes on even when we do not.”
“Sticks and stones keep breaking my bones but these words, these words will kill me.”
“Hope.
It's like a drop of honey, a field of tulips blooming in the springtime. It's a fresh rain, a whispered promise, a cloudless sky, the perfect punctuation mark at the end of a sentence. And it's the only thing in the world keeping me afloat.”
“On the darkest days you have to search for a spot of brightness, on the coldest days you have to seek out a spot of warmth; on the bleakest days you have to keep your eyes onward and upward and on the saddest days you have to leave them open to let them cry. To then let them dry. To give them a chance to wash out the pain in order to see fresh and clear once again.”
“Have you ever had a girlfriend, Kenji?"
"What?" He looks mortally offended. "Do I look like the kind of guy who's never had a girlfriend? Have you even met me?”
“He’s kissing me like the world is rolling right off a cliff, like he’s trying to hang on and he’s decided to hold on to me, like he’s starving for life and love and he’s never known it could ever feel this good to be close to someone. Like it’s the first time he’s ever felt anything but hunger and he doesn’t know how to pace himself, doesn’t know how to eat in small bites, doesn’t know how to do anything anything anything in moderation.”

Review
These books are like coming home for me, this series is probably my all time favourite, I could re-read this 1000 times and never be tired of it. I forgot what a beautiful writer Tahereh Mafi is, it amazes me what people can do with the 26 letters of the alphabet. I loved these books when they first came out and I love them now. These books are a force, they are beautiful, sad and eloquent, Tahereh Mafi know how to write character growth. She takes Juliet and whips her in a strong and capable badass on all counts. Is she whiny and scared and all up in her emotions... yes, does she sometimes make me roll my eyes... yes. But do I still feel for her and cry for her and sympathies with her... yes.
I think whats most remarkable about these books is that even when I'm maybe feeling like i want a little less emotion and a littler more action, I am reminded that Juliet, Warner, Adam, Kenji, James are just children they are 17, 18, 19, 10 they are young and their lives have been brutal. Not only these characters but all of them have faced dark and terrible things, they have been abused and tortured by each other, the government, their family and they are growing and changing. And I think Mafi does an exceptional job at making me feel for her characters and when I wish they would stop whining she has a talent for making me realize they are children that have been through exceptionally horrific things. This to me is the mark of a brilliant writer, she makes you love her characters and hope for them and feel for them. She makes them seem like people you know or could know, she makes you root for them, hope for them, wish better things for them. I very rarely read books that make me genuinely sad for the characters within the pages, Tahereh Mafi manages to do this again and again.
I am so glad there are so many of these books because I just want to keep reading and know all about our beloved characters. As I re-read this series in anticipation of Imagine Me, I remember why I fell in love with Tahereh Mafi's style of writing and cant' wait to finish off this series and see what she gifts us with next.
