Author: Carrie S. Allan Date Published: October 1st 2019 by Kids Can Press Date Read: Nov 14 2019 - Nov 16 2019 Pages: 304 Rating: 4/5 ReviewThis was good read not great but good. Michigan is badass let that not be lost, but she is also childish, stupid, selfish and reckless. She makes bad choices and doesn't listen to anyone about anything. She has terrible things happen to her that I know happen to women all over the world, especially women who play sports and even more for the women who play with men. I think this book is a beautiful idea and executed mostly in a good way, but I do think this story had some major flaws.
My biggest complaint is that I think young girls who are reading this may get the idea they shouldn't speak up about the things that are happening to them. Because although Michigan handles them and in the end gets help, I think this book perpetuates the idea that we (women) need to always be strong and we have no one to help us. I think this is portrayed through Michigans mother who is absent at best and mean at the worst. "Good intentions pave the road to hell" Is the sentiment that best encapsulates this book for me. My second biggest complaint is Michigan's teammates both her male and female. I think how those boys acted is terrible and there should be no forgiveness for them. We have Alex who is the only kind one to Michigan but does nothing to help her, he even allows Michigan to <be drugged, and assaulted> He faces no consequence either legal or just from Michigan. I think we need to be very careful in how we portray things like this to young people. They need to know that not taking action is just as bad as doing the terrible thing yourself. We need young people to know to stand up and protect one another. We need to ensure that young athletes know that hazing is not ok, is not allowed and will have consequences. The ending of the book does an ok job of showing the consequences for the terrible things that have happened to Michigan and the other member of the boys team, but I think there should have been more action taken during the book. Michigans friends are also pretty lack luster in my opinion especially Brie. I just think we should be showing young women what bad friends look like, and this book does a good job of showing that through Brie. She is selfish and immature and looks out for no one but herself. But I don't think the book does a good job and showing that Brie is a bad friend, Michigan just waves her off and lets her get away with these things because they are best friends. I will say I loved how badass Michigan is how she went out for what she wanted and didn't let anything stop her. Overall I think that this was a good read and I think I would like to look at it again to see if it's better than I think it is. I think we need more books about strong female athletes and how hard working and badass they are.
